ABOUT US

The aim of our Society is to promote enjoyment of the music and humour of Gilbert and Sullivan, in the Dreilaendereck region around Basel. The Gilbert and Sullivan Society is a friendly international group. Join us and discover the traditional music and humour of Gilbert and Sullivan!

We organize musical events for everyone; singers and non-singers, young and old.  We offer quality events led by professional musicians for your enjoyment.

The G&S Society aims to introduce you to this wonderful music, and is primarily a social group, and not a choir.  No singing or musical ability is required, and participation in musical events is voluntary!

SINGING

.

The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Basel is keen to build up and develop its growing pool of singers of all ages and nationalities. Long-term residents of the region form the mainstay of our chorus and group of soloists, but we are equally happy to swell our numbers with keen singers who are here for a limited time.  Rehearsals are scheduled in short concentrated blocks as needed for each musical project (i.e. no long-term commitment to weekly rehearsals is required).

What we can offer you:

  • We can put you in touch with experienced singing teachers.  In addition to providing general vocal training for your personal development (and, we hope, for your vocal contribution to our Society!), our recommended teachers have a particular interest in cultivating vocal music in English, and especially the music from Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operas.  Both individual and (small)-group lessons are possible. As of March 2018, our vocal teachers are Barbara Laurie, Beverley Worboys, Gillian MacDonald and Niklaus Rüegg.

  • Over the winter season (late autumn until early spring) we offer courses in reading music and sight-singing on request. These courses are geared to the needs of the participants, in groups of 2-6.

  • Several times a year there are opportunities to sing in public.  This can be on a small scale, e.g. at an afternoon tea party or Christmas carol evening, or, increasingly, on a larger scale. Since our successful production of Trial by Jury in 2013 we have been concentrating on “scenes from Gilbert and Sullivan”, which we choose in accordance with the singers who are available on that occasion.

  • When not preparing for a particular performance the chorus (especially the ladies) may anyway meet occasionally in the winter months to work on their choral sound and to build up their repertoire.

  • At least twice a year we offer workshops for singers of various levels. These workshops are led by experienced professional singers and stage performers.

GILBERT & SULLIVAN

WS Gilbert (1836-1911, librettist) and Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900, composer) were a world-famous composer-librettist duo of the British Victorian era whose memorable melodies and hilarious texts and character portrayals make their highly entertaining comic operas as relevant and enjoyable today as when they were first created.

Sullivan’s music could be compared with classical Italian music (Rossini, Donizetti) and Gilbert’s witty and timeless texts with the comedies of Shakespeare. However, you could also think of Sullivan as the British answer to Mozart, and Gilbert as the forefather of Monty Python!
